Hardware Prototyping Engineer, DeepMind Robotics Lab

Location: London

Length: 12 Months

Rate: £24.23 - £28.74 per hour

Hours: 9am – 6pm

Role description and responsibilities

Robotics Lab at DeepMind produces world-class research at the intersection of Robotics and AI. As a Hardware Prototyper/Maker in the Robotics lab, you will work on building, prototyping, testing, experimentation, debug and similar hands-on technical tasks for new sensors/actuators and devices to support robotics experiments.

Top 3 Daily Responsibilities:
  • Creating PCB schematics/layouts and rapid prototyping of PCBs, mechanical parts and other hardware through in-house facilities and external vendors. Building prototype systems such as Arduino, Processing to demonstrate new technology capabilities.
  • Creating embedded software for MCUs and simple UIs (Processing, Arduino, etc.), and simple device drivers on linux/macOS hosts to demonstrate hardware capabilities. Creating documentation/tutorials to allow others to use the hardware and drivers easily.
  • Coordinating with Robotics lab staff to operate 3D printers, laser cutters and other common equipment and tools to quickly develop mechanical prototypes.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS (MS preferred) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience
  • 3+ years industry experience in prototyping, hardware/electrical design and mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering lab equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, logic analysers, others).
  • Demonstrated PCB (schematics, layout) design experience and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated embedded firmware development experience, including ST Microelectronics SOCs and prototyping platforms such as Arduino, Processing and others/
  • Experience with common sensors/actuators (IMUs, light sensors, servo motors) and sensor interfaces (I2C, SPI, other).
  • 3D modelling experience (preferably with Onshape/Solidworks), experience with 3D printers.
  • Python and C/C++ programming skills.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Familiarity with industrial network and data acquisition systems, such as CAN and EtherCAT.
