Last Wednesday, a group of volunteers from Career Moves spent the morning at The Whitechapel Mission, our charity of the year, cooking and serving breakfast to around 300 homeless and vulnerable people.
The Whitechapel Mission is an incredible cause, not only providing breakfast 365 days per year to those in need, but also providing hot showers, clean clothes and life skills advice on basic administrative tasks from completing benefits forms or finding a hostel, to job applications and paying bills.
After a 5am wake up call, we all met at the Whitechapel Mission for a 5:45 briefing, before taking on our different tasks for the day. After volunteering to cook, I spent the next 4 hours cooking more bacon, sausages and bakes beans than I’ve seen in a lifetime, with my colleague cooking over 600 eggs for those having breakfast. Three of the team were on serving duty, pouring endless free cups of tea and coffee, and plating up and serving breakfast and chatting to all the visitors to the mission. All of this was supervised by Ramesh and Lukas, the two fantastic Whitechapel Mission staff members running the breakfast that day, keeping us all in check and entertained throughout the morning. At the end of the breakfast, mission clean up began with a full kitchen clean, moving into the dining halls to make it fresh and clean for the following day’s breakfast.
Without the Whitechapel Mission, it’s dedicated staff members and volunteers, hundreds of people would go without basic things like food and showers every day. They are an invaluable member of the community and an incredibly good cause.
