career moves group: news
Turning talent retention on its head
12 Oct 2012
hr moves, part of the career moves group, yesterday hosted a thought provoking lunch at The Ivy in association with Jane Sunley, CEO of learnpurple. Addressing an audience of 40 HR Directors, Jane offered her advice on how organisations could become people magnets: attracting and development talent that fits.
The crux of the presentation, was the need to understand and communicate with employees as individuals; in order to develop and retain the talent needed to transform an organisation and its’ bottom-line. This can be achieved, Jane believes, by addressing your company’s brand values, ensuring that they are representative of what your workforce is endorsing in their roles daily.
Businesses, Jane discussed, should find out what their employees think their company stands for and then use their ideas, coupled with the organisation’s corporate objectives, to build a company image which will be transparent for employees both internally and externally; the “what we’re all about and how we do things around here”.
Jane commented that trying to engage employees who don’t buy into your organisation’s vision is futile. Instead, energies should be spent guiding and building up those who are engaged but may just need a bit of fine tuning.
Questions ensued about engaging freelancers. Should one? The CEO of learnpurple believed that you have to look at this on a case-by-case basis, if a freelancer wishes to buy into the organisation, nurture this request as after all it’ll affect who they work with. If the inclination isn’t there then it isn’t something that can be forced.
Reviewing talent is key Jane believes and in order to do this you need to understand where individuals are coming from and what motivates them. Touching on Generation Theory, Jane explained the best way to get the most out of employees is to use their language, in the case of the emerging generation; Generation Z this mode will probably be virtual!
Commenting on the seminar’s success Managing Director of career moves group, Caroline Foote says, “We were delighted to have had such a terrific turn out. Jane’s speech was certainly stirring and prevalent in today’s demanding work environment, where employee performance is key to a company’s success. We look forward to hosting our next seminar in early 2013; we’ll examine the Generation Theory and see the real effect it has on communication in the work place,”

CAREER MOVES GROUP SUMMER RAFFLE RAISES £1,000 FOR THE HOSPICE O
31 Aug 2012
career moves group is delighted to announce that it raised a grand total of £1,000 for The Hospice of St Francis in Hertfordshire. The company matched the £500 which was raised through an online raffle and fundraiser night out at night club Tiger Tiger in central London.
The hospice is the only in patient unit with special facilities that allows patients to be cared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week in its catchment area. It also helps patients who are seriously ill at home. However it needs to raise more than £3.5million every year to continue to provide this quality of service. www.stfrancis.org.uk
We are very grateful to Fitness First, NBC Universal, Crossogue Preserves, Channel 4, Demon Music, Random House and Tiger Tiger who donated raffle prizes for the draw. The prizes included a gym membership, blue ray DVD bundles, a luxury hamper of Irish jam, award winning artist CD bundles, a collection of celebrity and lifestyle books and a VIP nightclub night out.
Kelsey Martin and Francesca Goodwin were the winners of the star draw raffle prize, a trip to Paris, sponsored by career moves group. The prize was presented by Charlotte Minoprio, Corporate Fundraising Manager of The Hospice of St Francis. We hope that they have “un temps incroyable,” in the French capital.
Caroline Foote, Managing Director of career moves group says, “we are thrilled that we have managed to contribute towards the vast amount that needs to be raised each year to help The Hospice of St Francis offer the quality of service it provides. We’d also like to thank all candidates who attended the fund raising evening and supported the charity by buying raffle tickets,”.

Career Moves Group shifts to Cloud IT
19 Jul 2012
Recruitment agency, Career Moves Group, successfully shifts its whole IT infrastructure into the Cloud working with Oncore IT
• 10% reduction in annual IT spend by adopting the Cloud for IT delivery
• Redundancy and availability of business critical systems guaranteed
• Innovative step into the Cloud adds flexibility and scalability for business growth
Oncore IT, a Cloud and IT managed services provider, today announced that it has signed a three year contract with Career Moves Group (CMG), one of London’s top recruitment agencies, to manage its whole IT infrastructure in the Cloud. This is an innovative step for CMG which will reduce its overall IT costs, improve business continuity by guaranteeing the availability of business critical systems while creating a flexible IT platform to support company growth.
Oncore IT is providing a full enterprise Cloud service which covers application and virtualised server hosting, storage, online back up and disaster recovery, email anti virus and spam protection, 24/7 monitoring and support. To facilitate the move to the Cloud, CMG purchased a 100 MB leased line to connect its offices to Oncore IT’s highly secure data centre in the City.
Based in Carnaby Street, London, Career Moves Group is a specialist recruitment agency focused on media – publishing, PR, and broadcasting – and a range of other industries such as finance and utilities. Founded in 1985 and privately owned, the firm employs 23 staff and places on average 657 permanent and temporary candidates each year. It works for a range of high profile clients including Channel 4, EMI, MTV, Penguin Group, Publicis, Sky, The Independent, Random House and Sage.
The primary motivation for CMG to adopt a Cloud service was to have experts look after its hardware and software and to improve its provision for disaster recovery. In addition, the Cloud means that CMG has increased operationally flexibility and scalability.
Steve Mason, Career Moves Group’s IT manager, explains, “Failover is now much better and measured in just a couple of hours plus moving to the Cloud makes our business more agile. Opening a new office is easy and requires very little investment – all IT systems are now off site, so all that is needed is an Internet connection and staff are up and running.”
Furthermore, moving to the Cloud is cheaper in the long term as CMG now leases its IT equipment rather than buying it, and servers are virtualised so that hardware is used to its maximum. Leasing has three key benefits: first, it avoids the obvious upfront capital expenditure, second, the latest hardware is always provided, and third, software licences can be scaled up and down depending on CMG’s needs. As a result, the expectation is that during the contract, 10% on total IT costs will be saved utilising a Cloud model.
In addition to hardware, Oncore IT also has responsibility for CMG’s key applications. These include RDB Pro Net, a recruitment database solution, TempAid, payment and invoicing software for recruiters, along with Sage, and Microsoft Office and Exchange.
Mason says, “In terms of transitioning to the Cloud, it was a relatively simple process and our staff didn’t really know what was happening. Onsite and Cloud systems were run in parallel and, on switch over day, all that users had to do was login slightly differently.”
Now a long-term customer, CMG first selected Oncore IT in 2006 after poor experiences working with another IT outsourcing firm who supplied unreliable servers and down time was commonplace. Mason says, “At one stage we had three days without IT. That meant staff couldn’t work, we lost candidate placements, and of course, revenue. Down time is just too costly – if systems go down for just one day, it could easily pay for six months of IT.”
During the original tender process, CMG looked at six firms, their solutions and how they do things, selecting Oncore IT because of its impressive data centres, NOC (network operations centre) and quality of staff. Mason says, ”Oncore IT’s technical knowledge is phenomenal and their problem solving skills are excellent. You give them an issue and they fix it, plus their account management staff are very supportive and you’re not seen as just a number like some of the bigger firms.”
For six years, Oncore IT provided a managed service for CMG with all its IT infrastructure located onsite at its Carnaby Street office. Today, CMG has fully transitioned its IT systems to the Cloud in a project which took one month to complete.
Mason says, “The concept of the Cloud is a bit dragon-like at the moment as there’s lot of myths associated with it. But once you understand that all you’re doing is putting your servers off site and giving the responsibility of hardware and software management to really professional and expert people who look after it, the whole FUD [fear, uncertainty, and doubt] surrounding Cloud goes away.”
In terms of offering advice to other companies considering embracing the Cloud, Mason says, “You need to look very carefully at who you are going with and how you will be supported. If three days of downtime becomes ten, it could cost you your business. You’ve got to choose a partner who you trust and where there is a good working relationship. Our journey was seamless based on our past experiences working with the Oncore IT team.”
Paul Cook, Oncore IT’s head of sales and marketing, says, “A step-by-step transition from onsite managed services to the Cloud has worked very well for CMG. The key thing for a Cloud partner is to demonstrate that they are able to scale, can guide clients over time by offering a consultative service so that shifting to the Cloud isn’t precarious. This also means that any investment made in a solution day one isn’t wasted.”
Oncore IT achieves this by offering a one-stop-shop service having invested in its own best-of-breed infrastructure and data centre facilities. It also guarantees SLAs, and has account managers and technical staff skilled in helping SMEs over time with their IT solutions.
Cook concludes, “The last thing a SME can afford is to get into a scenario where their [Cloud] partner fails to deliver because some aspect of the service is subbed out and then a blame game starts between the different parties. Ultimately companies like CMG want to focus on their own business and leave IT to the pros, so partnering with an organisation who owns the whole IT jigsaw is key which is where Oncore IT excels.”

CMG Supports successful Summer Wines evening event
04 Jul 2012
cmg support recently hosted a brilliant ‘Exploring taste with summer wines’ event at Bar Soho which was a huge success. The evening was run in conjunction with wine educator Carolyn Bosworth Davis, who was fantastic in helping to create a sociable and relaxed atmosphere, perfect to taste the exceptionally fine and rare wines available.
Although the primary aim of the night was to help guests gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wine, the mix between tasting and talking was exactly right. The evening provided the chance to speak to like minded people within the industry and make great new contacts.
Credit must be given to Bar Soho for such a great night and further thanks must be given to Carolyn Bosworth Davis, without which we would all be none the wiser. Finally a huge thank you to all those who attended the evening, we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. See you next time, cmgsupport…
SURVEY SHOWS THAT 92% OF RESPONDENTS WOULD RECOMMEND OUR SERVICE
02 Jul 2012
career moves group recently conducted a survey amongst its clients to ascertain feedback on their specific recruitment requirements, and on the class of service it delivers to them.

The majority of clients who replied to the survey thought that career moves group consultants were good communicators, as over 2/3 of the respondents said our consultants asked for guidance if any aspects of the recruitment process were unclear.
Group Managing Director of career moves group Caroline Foote says, “ the survey is part of a continuous quarterly improvement exercise, which we are doing on an ongoing basis. Resilience & Mental Toughness In Difficult Times - A Summary
19 Mar 2012
Thank you to all those who attended our successful Working Lunch seminar last week. I hope you agree it was a very useful occasion, and that, after a delicious main course at The Ivy, Professor Ivan Robertson, our guest speaker, gave an informative talk to the audience of senior HR Directors. Here’s a summary, especially if you were one of the few who were unable to attend:
Professor Robertson (Professor of Organisational Psychology at Leeds University Business School, Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester and co-founder of Robertson Cooper) delivered a talk on the theme of Resilience and mental toughness in difficult times. Resilience, the ability to stay focussed, perform at a high level and stay well, even when the pressure is on, is a characteristic that can help individuals and their organisations survive and flourish in difficult times.
The essence of Professor Robertson’s theme was that we get the most out of our workforce when employees are positively engaged and physically well. He provided many statistics from research showing that people who are happy and healthy have higher outputs then those who are less so inclined, thus getting ill more often, and delivering less.
Professor Robertson pointed out that to motivate employees it is best for managers to ‘over-communicate’. Repeating a message and duplicating information is preferable to adopting a more relaxed, hands off approach that risks employees feeling that they are “lacking in direction”. Employees will be most resilient when leaders give them a sense of purpose and make them feel engaged. This in turn, gives them a sense of well-being which can be self-reinforcing.
Professor Robertson discussed the idea that resilience is crucial to supporting and sustaining businesses for the future. He argued that improved morale and well-being is one of the major untapped resources of the economy. He explained that even though many organisations have started to engage with the topic of resilience, very few have actually integrated it into their HR strategy, so missing the many benefits that a resilient workforce can deliver.
For a more in-depth insight into Professor Robertson’s findings on emotional resilience and well-being at work and how you can implement it in your working environment please visit Robertson Cooper’s website www.roberstoncooper.com. Here you will find information on how to develop resilience within your organisation and employees, including their first ever free product i-resilience, and a free download – Building morale and resilience – the key to surviving difficult times.

career moves group is delighted to announce that the 16 to 19-year-olds it has been mentoring have successfully completed work placements in BBC Worldwide, BP, Imperial College Business School, Lloyds Banking Group and Prudential and a number of other reputable employers.
career moves group employees act as career advisors to pupils at Queens Park Community School in Brent through an organisation called Career Academies UK. Career Academies UK supports a movement of over 900 employers, and over 120 schools and colleges to raise the aspirations of 16 to 19-year-olds.
On a monthly basis, consultants from career moves group visit Queens Park Community School and provide advice to students on how to write CVs and apply for work placements. They also prepare them for interviews, giving coaching on what to wear and what (and what not) to say.
After their placements, the enthusiastic pupils meet again with their career moves group mentors to provide feedback on their internships. One mentee, Senali, who did a human resources internship at Prudential, is now planning a career in HR. Her internship was the first thing she mentioned in her personal statement on her UCAS form. Without career moves group’s mentoring she didn’t think she would have had the confidence to attend a work placement interview let alone complete a placement, she said.
Sheryll Karpel, a director of career moves group and chair of Queens Park Community School’s Career Academies advisory board says: “We are delighted to be able to work with these keen and talented 16 to 19-year-olds. Preparing them for their work placements is very rewarding and we have watched them blossom into confident articulate individuals. Prior to giving them advice during out employability sessions, many of the mentees were shy and reluctant to discuss their aspirations. Gaining experience in busy work environments — as they were able to — is key to helping them understand how companies function. We are proud to be able to help them arrive at this goal.”
For more information about Career Academies UK and the work it does please contact Sheryll Karpel on Tel: 020 7758 4302 Email: sheryll.karpel@careermovesgroup.co.uk

pr moves networking breakfast goes down a treat...
16 Aug 2011
- Top industry professionals discuss brand identity during breakfast seminar -
At the Hospital Club on Wednesday the 3rd August, the Head of PR for Hearst Magazines UK – Jane Wynyard – gave a presentation on the leading media company’s brand activity.
The event, organized by specialist recruitment consultancy pr moves, saw senior PR professionals turn up in their droves as they looked to get an insight into the revitalized offering from Hearst Magazines UK.
With a portfolio comprising 46 properties across digital and print, it’s a hugely diverse company, and the impressive Jane proceeded to guide the audience through them, showing how they differentiate between the corporate brand and the individual properties.
The focus was on two of Hearst Magazines’ most successful campaigns to date, ‘100 Years of the National Magazine Company’ and ‘30 Days of Fashion and Beauty’. From a ‘cover mosaic’ at the Saatchi Gallery, to comments from the Prime Minister, all of the PR coups were there.
There was also a run-through of the ideals that drive Britain’s leading magazine company. With bees on the balcony and grass on the roof, Jane talked through how the company is growing ever-more-green. There were also lovely little anecdotes about the history of the titles, with Good Housekeeping’s government backing during the war and after watching the hilarious ‘Bond inspired’ 1972 launch advert for Cosmopolitan, it will be interesting to see how they launch the magazine in Singapore next month.
Head of pr moves Eleanor Karadimitriadis says: “Apart from having more people than seats, pr move’s breakfast event was a tremendous success. We have had the feedback we’d hoped for, with many commenting on how engaging Jane’s talk was. We’ve also had entirely unexpected feedback, with the networking event leading to some attendees striking new business partnerships. We are looking forward to the next one!”
pr moves will be running more events such as this one over the next year, so keep an eye on the website for the latest information.

HOT DEBATE
23 May 2011
hr moves successfully hosted a working breakfast for human resources professionals in conjunction with employment law specialist Helen Wyatt, Partner at Goodman Derrick LLP on Thursday 19th May. Helen spoke about The Agency Workers Regulations 2010 which come into effect on 1st Oct 2011 and other law affecting the recruitment industry.
Questions from attendees flamed the air as Helen pointed out that contrary to some media coverage which claimed that temps will receive the same employment rights as permanent employees, they will not.
The new rights that temps will receive can be split into 3 main categories:
1.From day one of a temporary assignment:
(a) a right to be treated no less favourably than a comparable employee of the hirer in relation to access to collective facilities and amenities such as canteen facilities, child care facilities and transport services.
(b) a right to be informed by the hirer of any relevant vacant posts within the hirer and to be given the same opportunity as comparable employees to find permanent employment with the hirer.
2. After completion of a 12 week qualifying period on assignment (and such qualifying period is specifically defined by the Regulations):
(a) a right to be paid the same “pay” (as defined by the Regulations); and
(b) a right to have the same periods or amounts of working time, night work, rest, breaks and annual leave; as the worker would have received had they been directly recruited into the job by the hirer.
3. After completion of a 12 week qualifying period on assignment, an agency worker who is pregnant will have the right to paid time off for ante-natal care; and special additional rights if her assignment is ended prematurely on maternity grounds.
Are freelancers protected by the Agency Workers Regulations 2010?
The status of and application of the Regulations to freelance workers sparked more questions. Are they excluded?
The answer is dependent on the hirer’s definition of the word “freelancer”. However if the freelancer is a company or individual engaged on a contract for services directly by the hirer, they are unlikely to be subject to the protection of the Regulations.
If they are supplied via an agency and cannot be described as under the supervision and direction of the hirer and can be classified in law as genuinely self employed, then they are unlikely to be subject to the protection of the Regulations, although as discussed at our breakfast, this is a difficult test to meet.
Why use an agency if we need to provide all these extra benefits?
Another attendee questioned using an agency if it meant their company having to provide extra benefits, would it not be easier to hire directly? There is no easy answer to this question. Arguably temps will want these forms of protection and will favour going through an agency. Temps also provide a level of workforce flexibility that is more difficult to achieve if hiring directly.
A debate then ensued throughout the room about the practicalities of agencies and clients working together in light of the Regulations.
In an ideal world, agencies and clients will work with the Regulations and co-operate more closely with regard to information exchange to ensure that the rights created by them are correctly provided to agency workers. But other options are available.
Helen believes that some clients will favour limiting temporary assignments to 12 weeks duration and there will be an increase in clients wishing to hire the temp directly either on a fixed term basis or in a permanent role when the 12 weeks is up.
One attendee believed that agencies will try the “Swedish derogation”, a structure by which agency workers are employed by their agency on specific terms between assignments, which exempt the worker from enjoying the right to equal pay after 12 weeks on assignment, but does not exempt the worker from other rights provided by the Regulations.
Can a temp claim to be working for a continuous stretch of time if he/she works for different companies within a group of associated companies?
A HR Director asked what would happen if a temp moved from one company to another within a group of associated companies, would their time be a collective and thus entitle them to a temp rights after a continuous 12 week period within the group?
The answer was no as the companies themselves are seen as individual employers. However, if it was the case that the worker was deliberately moved within the group in order to avoid the effect of the Regulations, it was noted that the Regulations specifically address this. Such avoidance tactics can result in the hirer becoming liable in Employment Tribunal proceedings, if such proceedings are issued by the worker, for a punitive award of up to £5,000.
If you would like a copy of the presentation from our working breakfast or anymore information regarding the seminar please contact Hannah Bull on 020 7758 4314.

Changes Announced for 2012 Tax Budget
25 Mar 2011
For the Tax year 2011/2012, effective 6th April 2011, there are two items that will have a direct impact on temping pay and charge rates.
For the temps, the net effect in their pay will most likely be positive as the NI free element of their weekly pay has gone up from £110 to £139, although their Employee’s NI has also increased from 11.8% to 12%, a 0.2% increase.
For clients, there is a straight forward increase in charge rate as Employer’s NI is due to increase by 1% from 12.8% to 13.8% and we unfortunately have to pass on this increase.
